Why Isn't RTO Fixing Collaboration?
Plus, uncovering the relationship between cost of living and workplace flexiblity
👋 Happy Tuesday! Recent findings from the UK's Office of National Statistics reveal an interesting paradox in today's workplace revolution: while Gen Z increasingly questions the value of a university education, a degree might be the very key to securing the flexible work arrangements they desire. The data show that degree holders are 10 times more likely to land hybrid roles.

THIS WEEK’S FLEX FOCUS 🔍
RTO Failing to Deliver on Boosted Collaboration
Despite corporate America's push to bring workers back to offices for better collaboration, the opposite has occurred. Gartner data shows workplace collaboration satisfaction dropped from 36% to 29% since 2021, with remote workers reporting better collaboration than on-site staff.
The problem isn't just about location – political polarization and pandemic-normalized independent work have created new barriers. As former Publicis Groupe strategist Rishad Tobaccowala observes, employees now come to offices only to recreate remote work environments, sitting alone with headphones on.
The solution lies not in physical proximity but in guided collaboration. Companies need to actively teach collaborative practices – something two-thirds of organizations currently fail to do. Success stories like Yelp show that intentional collaboration policies matter more than office mandates.

STAT OF THE WEEK 📈
The Relationship between Cost of Living and Workplace Flexibility
Is there a relationship between an area’s cost of living and the flexible work policy of its employers? Across 38 major metros, areas with a higher cost of living are much more likely to have work location flexibility.
Why? The relationship between cost of living and flexible work is primarily driven by a few factors: industry mix (these areas have more Technology, Finance, and Professional Services firms), commute pain (that is, how time-consuming the commute is), the cost associated with said commuting into the office (gas, parking, food, and related expenses), and even local politics.

RTO Mandates: Hard Truths for Leaders
As major tech giants like Amazon and Dell double down on RTO mandates, promising enhanced productivity and stock market gains, workplace expert Brian Elliott warns of a dangerous disconnect between executive expectations and reality. The latest research reveals these mandates may be doing more harm than good, creating a perfect storm of reduced productivity and talent exodus.
Rather than boosting performance, Elliott's analysis shows that mandatory office returns typically trigger an initial productivity dip while sending a clear message of distrust to high-performing employees. The irony is striking: organizations risk alienating their most valuable assets in pursuing short-term operational control – the very talent that drives innovation and growth.
