The Rent and Flexibility are High!
For the first time in a Flex Report, we examined the relationship between an area’s cost of living and its employers' flexible work policies. The big takeaway? Across 38 major metros, areas with a higher cost of living are much more likely to have work location flexibility.
There are four reasons why:
More tech, finance, and media jobs in these metros — all industries that have higher levels of work location flexibility
Longer commutes — people live further away for lower cost of living, and don’t want to come in as often
Expensive to go in — gas, parking, food, and childcare all add up
Local politics / culture — Matthew E. Kahn (professor at USC) found that blue states tend to have much higher rates of hybrid work
