Flex Report | Canada Deep Dive
Hybrid work is a hot topic in Canada at the moment, especially for federal workers! Recent new hybrid rules requiring federal workers to come into the office a minimum of three days a week have been met with stiff resistance by four unions who are planning a “summer of discontent.”
We were curious — what are the broader trends in hybrid work in Canada? Does the adoption of work location flexibility look the same as it does in the United States, or are there meaningful differences? This report is our first-ever deep dive into work location flexibility in Canada; we also compare/contrast each key measure with policies in the US.
Want a sneak peek of what’s in the report? Here’s a little preview👇
Canada Outflexes the United States
84% of Canadian firms offer work location flexibility (compared to 69% of U.S. companies), with just 16% requiring employees to be Full Time in Office.
Fully Flexible is Rarer at Canadian Companies
Despite the love of hybrid work in Canada, fully remote work is far less common, with just 16% of companies offering it versus 31% of American companies.
More Days / Week in Office in Canada
The average Canadian is expected to come into the office more frequently than the average American, mostly due to a higher prevalence of Structured Hybrid models.
On average, Canadian employees must be onsite 2.68 days a week, which is in part driven by the fact that nearly 50% of companies require employees to come in at least 3 days per week. In contrast, the U.S. average is 2.49 days per week in the office.
In the Media
Forbes: About one in five HR professionals say they hoped for some voluntary turnover as a result of a return to office policy.
Fox: Summer Fridays were once seen as an easy and popular way for companies to increase employee morale and provide flexibility in an increasingly competitive job market.
Harvard Business Review: There is no easy solution for companies trying to craft policies that balance in-office and flexible working, as there are undeniable benefits to both approaches.
